In 2016, more than 4,300 people were killed in crashes involving semis and other large trucks. This was a 28 percent increase over 2009, according to the federal government! A very high percentage of these deaths involved high speed rear-end crashes.
Yet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal regulatory agency responsible for protecting us from danger on our roads, has not mandated changes that over the past two decades might have averted thousands of high speed rear-end truck crashes. While big trucks collide with cars in a variety of ways, experts say rear-end crashes are among the most devastating.
Most people think that big semi’s steer, handle and brake just like the average passenger car. They are wrong! Drivers of “18 wheelers” must have special licenses before they can legally get behind the wheel of a semi-tractor trailer. But, a trucker’s special license alone won’t protect you if he or she fails to exercise reasonable care while operating one of these big rigs and crashes into the rear of your car! And, it won’t protect your loved ones and family either.
The major trucking carriers are smart. If one of their semi’s are involved in a crash involving injuries or death of another motorist, they make it their first priority to rush teams of special investigators, lawyers and accident reconstruction experts out to the crash scene. Their goal? To gather evidence and interview witnesses favorable to their driver…even before the police arrive. And, of course, before you’ve even had a chance to hire a lawyer to protect your rights.
